Kong
One of the challenges of implementing safe and effective pet therapy is learning to successfully split your attention between your dog and the other people in the room. Having a dog that is crate trained or trained to go to its mat is highly beneficial in being able to ensure your dog is safe and relaxed when you are not able to observe it. A kong to lick while it is waiting can be a nice reward and encouragement for calm behaviour.
Must Know Information for everyone involved in Pet Therapy
Canine body language - Stress Signals bookmark
If you see a dog displaying any of these signals take action and reflect on the situation. Some questions to ask yourself ...has the dog ever been exposed to that under the exact same conditions? Is he/she tired? Do you need to spend more time with the child/adult reflecting and role playing how we interact in a way that your dog likes? Feel free to distribute these bookmarks to educate and advocate. |
